Is Your Online Sharing The Important Stuff?

Dec. 3rd, 2014, “Is Your Online Sharing The Important Stuff?”

I’m 56…. Just had a little bout with Melanoma. Had other health issues over the years but for some reason the skin cancer thing hit me different. It’s clear that I really am going to exit this place one of these days…. My “hour glass” has less sand in the top than on the bottom…maybe WAY less! And as we’ve all heard people say after some big “life changing event” or health issue, “I’m now considering and wondering about how I’m spending my time much more seriously cuz I’m not sure how much more I’ve got left”….

A few nights ago I watched a show on PBS about Richard Pryor and then Robin Williams. Both gone now. Amazing men with amazing, and in some ways, tragic stories. But people who impacted millions with their gifts, talents and personalities. And they continue to do so today. Why? Because they’re still “alive” through film, TV, written and audio recordings. No doubt tens of thousands of hours and probably hundreds of thousands of dollars or more was spent making those recordings…

Then there’s little ol’ you and me. If you’re like me you’ve shared your opinion and maybe even put up some videos, photos and written things on Facebook, Linkedin or some other social site and/or website or blog……stuff that will be there even after you’re long gone…all for basically free.

The question I’m now asking myself is “what am I putting out there that will be my legacy or message”? Trivia? Political opinions or rants? MY latest promotion at work, what I did, made, or achieved? Or am I including the other important things like how proud I am of my wife and boys. What I love about them and why. What THEY have done, made or achieved. As well as what OTHERS have as well.

More and more the movies, videos and stories that move me are the ones that show love, charity, grace, mercy, kindness, humor and people overcoming hardship and adversity. Positive stories about things I love. America. Creativity. Our histories. The great Peoples of the earth, the environment and the skies above. Beyond that stories that inspire thinking beyond this world. Why are we here? What’s the point of life? The “Biggies”…

I’ve always wanted to “make a difference” in the world, whatever that might mean, even when I was lost in my own generally self indulgent pursuits through my twenties, thirties and forties… Now is different. As we get older life has a way of making us wiser, less focused on ourselves, and more interested in being a blessing and help to others. At least that’s what I’ve seen in my life.

I do not know what day I will exit this place. Which means every day matters, is precious and irretrievable. So what will I do today? How will I bless someone? And what will I be putting online? Let us do what matters and share what’s important through the amazing power of the internet for the blessing and benefit of all….before the sand runs out of our hour glasses and the clock runs out…
